π The Great Gale of 1865 – A ferocious storm wrecked 18 ships in Table Bay overnight, including the RMS Athens. Driven onto rocks between Mouille Point and Green Point, the steamer claimed 30 livesβonly a lone pig survived. Today, its iron engine block still juts from the waves as a haunting relic.
(This treasure tale is woven into the quest for dramatic funβpure fiction!)
βοΈ It was a stormy night on May 17, 1865, the RMS Athens was anchored in Table Bay, preparing for a voyage to Mauritius. A fierce northwest gale struck, forcing the ship’s captain to attempt to steam out into the open sea.
π¨ββοΈ Captain OβMalley, a man whose moustache was far more impressive than his nautical skills, steered the RMS Athens into Table Bay. He was preparing for a voyage to Mauritius, but a “wee bit of a gale” was brewing. This was not just any gale; it was the Great Gale of 1865, a storm that would go down in history for its power to spontaneously disassemble ships.
π’ “Nothing to worry about, boys!” the captain bellowed over the wind. “Just a bit of a breeze!” The breeze whipped itself into a frenzy, tearing at the ship like an angry toddler. Mountainous waves smashed over the deck. The ship, now a glorified hunk of iron, was driven onto the rocks!
π§ The crew and passengers, all of whom tragically perished, were not the only ones aboard. A penguin, named Percival, was also on board. While the humans were being tossed about, Percival was busy in his enclosure, happily sorting his fish and wondering why the ship was so loud. When the ship broke apart, he simply waddled overboard and swam ashore, but not before he stole the captain’s journal! He survived the ordeal with nothing more than a mild case of sea-sickness and a newfound dislike for loud noises.
π Generations passed. The engine block of the Athens became a tourist attraction, a landmark for joggers and strollers along the promenade. Percy Puddlefoot, a third cousin three times removed from Percival, just found the journal Percival stole. It turns out O’Malley was smuggling real treasure, gold, diamonds and most importantly, good whisky. Captain O’Malley made plans to offload it and burying it in the harbour before the ship was searched by custom officials (and before the storm hit).
π The journal contained a map using 15 landmarks. The storm washed away the final ‘X’, but the 15 waypoints remain. Follow in Percy’s footsteps, in search of the RMS Athens treasure, hopefully a crate full of tin sardines!
