The legendary Kruger Millions and the long-lost journal
The story of the Kruger Millions dates back to the Anglo-Boer War (1899-1902), when President Paul Kruger accumulated a vast fortune in Z.A.R. Pond gold to finance the Boer resistance against the British. The treasure was entrusted to loyal aides and hidden in June 1900, with its location remaining a secret for over a century. The approximately 260,000 troy ounces of gold, now estimated to be worth $1 billion USD, was believed to have been buried in various secret spots.
In a dramatic twist of fate, a forgotten leather-bound journal was discovered during renovations at the Union Buildings in Pretoria. The journal, dating from around 1900-1920, was found by conservators tucked away in a neglected records room. It contained cryptic references to “golden cargoes” and secret train routes, immediately linking it to the legend of the Kruger Millions. Experts believe the journal belonged to railway magnate Sir William Hoy, due to his distinctive handwriting and railway ties, and was likely archived after his death in 1930.
